The quantifiable market value for a used sail is produced by taking the retail price for a new sail of the same genre, material & dividing by 2 & then muliplying that price by a rating our of 10. With 1 being the lowest factor and 10 being the highest. A rating of 5 would have a predicted average durability of 50% of its designed & manufactured life remaining thus establishing transparent & fair values for inventory you would want to exchange.

The quantifiable market value for a used sail is produced by taking the retail price for a new sail of the same genre, material, weight & options and dividing that price by 2, then multiplying that price by a rating out of 10. With 1 being the lowest factor and 10 being the hightest. A rating of 5 would have a predicted average durability of around 50% of its designed & manufactured life remaining thus establishing transparent & fair values for inventory you want to exchange.
EXAMPLE - The price of a new Dacron 40sqm Headsail would be $3,200 or $80 per square meter. Therefore a used sail of the same characteristics with a ranking of 10 woulld be $1,600, a ranking of 7.5 would be $1,200 (roughly 1/3 of the price of a new sail), and a rating of 5 would be $800 & so on.
Once the price of your used sail in confirmed & the sail is resold you can realise that value in 2 different ways
CONSIGNMENT 1. The Sail Exchange shares the final selling price 50/50 with the consignee. The consignees payment of 50% of the selling price will be paid via EFT directly into the consignees bank account.
CONSIGNMENT 2. The Sail Exchange will provide a consignment credit of 80% of the resale value of the used sail as a store credit redeemable against purchases from our online store (new & used sails not included).

HOW IT WORKS - Purchasing used sails
The purchasing of used sails will only be transacted via our "Used Sails" tab on this website. You are able to search "Viewing All Used Sails" or you can use the "Advanced Search Feature" which uses 1 of the 3 methods below to determin the closest sail size to suit your boat & rig. The methods are as follows -
- Use the rig data base & search by manufacturer, yacht model or One Design class.
- If your yacht does not appear in the rig data base then fill in your I, J, P &E as per the diagram.
- If you do not have your rig dimentions (I, J, P, &E) then simply enter the sail dimentions which you can measure yourself.
The main criteria for sail selection from our inventory is luff length, the sails will be selected via ascending luff length & we have the facilities to recut & repurpose any sail to fit your yacht. This can include changing slides, hanks, luff tapes, removing or cutting out logos, removing and installing new sail numbers ect...whilst also effecting any repairs as the used sails purchased from The Sail Exchange are purchased as is with no warranty & all of the additional work whether it be resizing or adding or removing hardware & battens are costs above the sail purchase price. We can effect these changes at The Sail Exchange on your behalf with a fixed quotation or you can take the sail to your local sailmaker. If your are not located in Sydney it is advisable to use a local sailmaker to ensure all hardware & bolt ropes interface correctly. The Sail Exchange can recommend sailmakers & sail lofts worldwide.
HOW IT WORKS - trading in used sails for used sails
The Sail Exchange will trade in your used sails for other used sails & we have 3 options, all options utilise our "Used Sail Valuation Method" where we take the quantifiable market value for a used sail by taking the retail price for a new sail of the same genre, material, weight & options & dividing that price by 2 & then muliplying that price by a rating out of 10. With 1 being the lowest factor & 10 being the highest. A rating of 5 would have a predicted average durability of around 50% of its designed & manufactured life remaining thus establishing transparent & fair values for inventory you want to exchange. With either option you are required to have your used sails delivered to our facility in Sydney so we can evaluate the sails with our valuation method at which point the sails will be rated, measured & photographed for website upload.
